What is ROI?

March 2, 2016

DBD International has released a video about what they think ROI is about: a return on ingenuity. This reinterpretation of what ROI means is not new to DBD International, though it hasn’t been so crisply presented before. For example, a return on ideas is about how an organisation can become more efficient, effective and value-adding, and previously, an ROR, or return on relationship, was also popularly suggested by Ted Rubin. Such reinterpretations are on the rise, as marketers try to justify the cost of marketing or brand/ad exercises against modest returns, particularly in the short run.

David Brier of DBD narrates the video. Key points:

“The power of ideas: They can make us smile. They can make us cry. They can inspire action. They can conquer defeat. They can launch a movement … or stop us in our tracks […] Their only power lies in us. As branders, we live to usher in the future, not stroke the past. While it might ruffle some feathers, it often can advance culture. […] This ingenuity is what separates the remarkable from the commodity, or the disruptor from the also-ran. […] Neither success nor failure is permanent; they are themselves fleeting and transient. It’s because the biggest mistake occurs when we stop at either of these points.”

Neon Trees – Everybody Talks

March 1, 2016

Hey baby won’t you look my way
I can be your new addiction
Hey baby what you gotta say?
All you’re giving me is fiction
I’m a sorry sucker and this happens all the time
I found out that everybody talks
Everybody talks, everybody talks

It started with a whisper
And that was when I kissed her
And then she made my lips hurt
I could hear the chit chat
Take me to your love shack
Mamas always gotta back track
When everybody talks back

Hey honey you could be my drug
You could be my new prescription
Too much could be an overdose
All this trash talk make me itchin’
Oh my my
Everybody talks, everybody talks
Everybody talks, too much

It started with a whisper
And that was when I kissed her
And then she made my lips hurt
I could hear the chit chat
Take me to your love shack
Mamas always gotta back track
When everybody talks back

Never thought I’d live
To see the day
When everybody’s words got in the way

Hey sugar show me all your love
All you’re giving me is friction
Hey sugar what you gotta say?

It started with a whisper
And that was when I kissed her
And then she made my lips hurt
I could hear the chit chat
Take me to your love shack
Mamas always gotta back track
When everybody talks back

Everybody talks, everybody talks
Everybody talks, everybody talks
Everybody talks, everybody talks back

It started with a whisper
And that was when I kissed her

Everybody talks, everybody talks back

Catmageddon

March 1, 2016

Catmageddon is a hilarious anti-smoking PSA that aired during the Grammys. Via Adweek:

The venerable anti-smoking initiative Truth has tried just about everything to get people to stop smoking: edgy teens, cowboys with electronic voiceboxes, even earnest appeals to our health and vanity. Now they’re pulling out the big guns.

Truth now says smoking is putting our nation’s cat videos at risk.

According to the ad below from 72andSunny, animals are twice as likely to get cancer (and die younger) if their owners smoke. Thus, quitting smoking is critical to staving off #CATmageddon, guaranteeing successors to Internet sensations like Keyboard Cat, Lil’ Bub, and Hamilton the Hipster … creating a better world for us all.

Every Best VFX Ever

February 29, 2016

Happy Monday! Here’s a compilation of every Best VFX winner ever, via Burgerfiction:

For the 1927/28 Academy awards, the award was for engineering effects. There was no award again until 1938 where it was called a special award “for outstanding achievement in creating special photographic and sound effects. The very next year the award was combined with sound effects and called the Award for Special Effects. It wasn’t until 1963 that the award became the Award for Best Visual Effects (which it is still called today). It was given every year from 1963 to present, with the exception of 1973. Hope you enjoy!
**Also we apologize for the two title mistakes. We had already uploaded it when we noticed:
*The Thief OF Bagdad
*Reap The Wild WIND

As far as VFX has come over the years, however, the industry’s in trouble. Cracks showed most visibly during the Life of Pi incident at the Oscars, where the VFX company Rhythm ‘N Hues, who won the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, filed for bankruptcy just 11 days beforehand. What went wrong?

The answer is dozens of places: changing technology, the fact that oodles of VFX studios vie for work from only six Hollywood studios, not to mention shrinking profit margins and enticing tax subsidies offered by other countries. It’s tragic, especially given that a lion’s share of award-winning films rely on visual effects. Production companies need visual effects studios. In the case of Life of Pi, without the crazy visuals and the CGI tiger, it wouldn’t have been half the film it was. And it was a very very beautiful film. That makes it all the more weird and sad that VFX outfits are going out of business.

Hopefully someday we’ll fix this.

Wallpaper in the 1960s

February 26, 2016

This cool video is about the fine art and craft of 1960s wallpaper manufacture. From This is Colossal:

The film was shot at a factory in Perivale, just ten miles west of London. All of the wallpaper designs found in the video are garish and bright, shot in a time when people were intent on matching their wallpaper to their curtains, couch coverings, and clothing. One particular shot shows a woman reading a magazine at home amongst her patterns, demonstrating how pervasive prints were in the home during the time period.

Continuing with a nearly poetic cadence the narrator ends the short video exclaiming, “Designs in profusion, kaleidoscopic colors—interior decorating has come a long way since father first papered the parlor!” British Pathé, a once leader in cinematic journalism, has uploaded several thousands films like this one to Youtube.
