Brief

Starship was asked to develop a fully integrated campaign for the Metropolitan Waste Management Group that built awareness about the dangers of asbestos when renovating a home, as well as to educate the public on appropriate disposal methods for any asbestos that they might find.

Challenges

The general public was at the time unaware that small DIY renovations could expose you to the dangers of asbestos: the prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibres could cause a great deal of serious illnesses, including lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis. Starship also found through research that there was a pervasive, general misunderstanding in the public of what asbestos actually looked like.

Unique brand space

Starship created the ‘Asbestos Check’ campaign and a three point check list that helps people to identify, handle, and dispose of asbestos.

Execution

Our campaign for the Metropolitan Waste Management Group was both direct, positive and contained a clear call to action, using a problem/solution style execution, with themes like Check before you wreck – directing the public to educate themselves on asbestos before commencing renovations, to Check before you dump – informing the public of appropriate disposal methods. The check list helped renovators and the general public to safely and legally deal with asbestos. This helped increase public safety with regards to DIY renovations.
